EU citizens do not need visas to enter Italy and can stay as long as they want with a permesso di Soggiorno (residence permit). Canadian and Swiss nationals are exempt from visa for stays of less than 90 days in all countries of the Schengen area.
However, even if you do not need a visa, do not forget to bring with you an identity document valid (passport or national map of identity).
